Art Along the Rogue River

October 2 & 3 marks the eighth anniversary of "Art Along the Rogue." This celebration of local, young artists' talents is sure to capitalize on this weekend's great Grants Pass weather!   In its 8th year, Art Along the Rogue will feature dozens of national, regional, elementary and high school student artists creating huge pastel chalk drawings on “H” St in Downtown Grants Pass. The theme for this year's event is “animals”.

New to Art Along the Rogue in 2010 is a Tap Walk. For $25, participants over 21 years can taste the regions best micro-brews in eleven locations in the downtown area. Restaurants and pubs will also feature delicious foods to accompany the micro-brews from 2:00 p.m to 5:00 p.m. Tap Walkers will receive a commemorative pint beer glass. Tickets will be available August 24, 2010 at Elegance, 321 SE 6th St in Grants Pass or by calling (541) 476-0570.

Another new addition to Art Along the Rogue this year is a “Doggy Art Walk”. Sponsored by the Rogue Valley Kennel Club.  At 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 3, 2010 dogs of all shapes and sizes will be artistically costumed and paraded through the festival on “H” St. Prizes will be awarded to the most artistic doggy.

Very fun and it promises to be fantastic weather for outside activities this weekend!

Southern Oregon's Glass Harvest Festival

The talented folks at Gathering Glass Studios in Ashland, Oregon in conjunction with Mobility Unlimited are introducing a "first annual" event entitled The 2010 Glass Harvest Festival. The October 9th and 10th event will be located in Gathering Glass Studios at 322 N Pioneer St in Ashland.

The Festival promises southern Oregon browsers an endless amount of "October eye candy" in the form of vibrant glass pumpkins, gourds, and leaves. The Studio is encouraging glass artists from all over the Northwest to showcase their unique works of art during the October event.

Organizers invite shoppers to come stroll through the glass harvest "fields" and gather your own fall bounty of glass. The Gathering Glass owners/artists will also be on hand doing demonstrations, custom designs and allowing you to become involved in the creative process of glass blowing.

Mark your calendars and make a stop at the Glass Harvest Festival your new annual holiday tradition.

4 Top Southern Oregon Family Hikes

Do you love to encourage your kids to get out and enjoy nature, fresh air, and interesting sites with you? Well then a hike might be the perfect outdoor family experience. Beautiful southern Oregon offers a wonderful array of hiking opportunities--from easy to difficult. Here are four family hiking trips that might just be the ticket for your next family outdoor adventure.

Big Tree Loop Trail:  3.3 miles  This trail is located near the Oregon Caves. Because most folks don't think of hiking when visiting the Oregon Caves area, it is a little used trail but extremely beautiful.

Grizzley Peak Trail:  4.8 miles  Offers and outstanding view of the Rogue Valley and the city of Ashland. Hiking the trial in early spring offers walkers an incredible wildflower show.

Rainie Falls Trail:  3.6 miles  Offers families a walk above the Rogue River. On hot days, families can relax in several calm pools of water along the way. At the end of the trail is Rainie Falls--where at certain times of the year you can spot salmon and steelhead jumping; trying to make their way up river.

Upper Table Rock Trail:  2.5 miles  This short, easy hike allows trekkers stunning views of the Rogue River Valley in three different directions. During the spring, hikers take in beautiful vistas of southern Oregon's wildflowers.

Rogue River's Rainie Falls-A First Descent

The article from the provocative 1859 Magazine begins, "We showed up with boats and kayaks, one friend brought only a stand-up paddle board. On May 14th, seven of us departed from the bridge at Grave Creek for a three-day float trip down the Wild & Scenic section of the Rogue River. My friend Tyler and I each brought our 14-foot oar boats; Bryan brought his kayak and Jayson Bowerman surprised us by showing up with his stand up paddle board.

"A well-seasoned kayaker, Bowerman has done other first descents in his kayak. He started on the stand-up board about four years ago as a new way to experience the river and surf. He's been down Oregon's Lower Deschutes, the McKenzie and was thinking about trying his luck this spring on Washington's Wenatchee River. The impending class V waterfalls and ripping class IV sections on the Rogue, however, were massive undertakings that called for immediate attention.

"Anyone who knows Bowerman, knows that his ability to challenge himself is second only to his ability to conceal those feats. His relationship to dire risk brings a smile to his face when others muster only a grimace."

And so goes the fascinating article written by Jason Mitchell. The story is peppered with equally interesting photos of Bowerman's stand-up boarding adventures on the Rogue River. Just another fun way to experience the most incredible rafting, kayaking (and now stand-up boarding) in Oregon! Check out Bowerman's entire Rogue River adventure in 1859 Magazine by clicking here.

It's a Rogue River Love Fest!

We captured some cute photos of just a few of the folks who traveled on Whitewater Warehouse's second 2010 gourmet wine and food trip. This trip also featured the cool Organic Nation Spirits owners and their top-quality organic gin and vodkas. These photos were shot on the morning of the third day of the August 29 - 31 Oregon Rogue River rafting & kayaking trip. Folks were enjoying a brief stop on the beach at Halfmoon along side the beautiful Rogue River.

Amazing Birds: From Eggs to Adults in Weeks

This blog is an excerpt taken from a July 1, 2010, Medford Mail Tribune article written by Stewart Janes, a Southern Oregon University biology professor. You can read Janes' entire article by clicking here.

"Humor me for just a moment and consider the following scenario. A child is born on New Year's Day. Congratulations. Valentine's Day finds the boy topping 100 pounds.

So much for the stroller.

On April Fool's Day of the same year the child, now a strapping lad of 160 pounds, leaves home to start a life of his own. Three months from birth to adult size! Think about the food bill. And how do you keep a child like that in clothes? Ridiculous you say, but this is how it works in the bird world.
The growth rate of our hypothetical hero reflects the growth of the golden eagle. From hatching to full size takes about 12 weeks. When a young bird takes its first flight from the nest, it weighs as much as mom and dad.

The growth rate is even more impressive for smaller birds, such as horned larks and Wilson's warblers, which spend only nine to 11 days in the nest. That's egg to adult size in less than two weeks."

Rogue River Walk

In 2007 a group of South Coast avid hikers decided to blaze a 6-plus-mile, user-friendly nature trail--calling it The Rogue River Walk--along the lower south bank of the Rogue River, near Gold Beach.

The original intent of the Rogue River Walk was recreational hiking. However, as construction proceeded, it was recognized that one particular segment consisted of riparian woodland: snags, deciduous trees, and thickets of low-growing shrubs--exceptional bird habitat. Songbirds and woodpeckers flourish here.

As a result, the 2-mile Jim Hunt Loop was created for birdwatchers. This is the most productive section, a hot spot on the trail for birders, designed so there is no need to retrace steps.

After 18 months of steady toil, the RRW is complete. Its length meanders under towering cedar, oak, and madrone while weaving between aged, inter-twined willow, elderberry and stands of giant horsetail. Hikers also pass through an aptly named "Mystic Myrtles" grove carpeted with sorrel and overgrown pioneer homesteads. Some interpretive markers are posted. Seasonal wildflowers abound.

If you are interested in a map with directions and completed details, you can pick up a copy at the Gold Beach Visitor Center.

Information on the Rogue River Walk was provided by the October 2010 edition of Oregon Coast magazine.
